READ THIS FIRST: Storage instructions for Lumos helmets!
To get the most out of the helmet's battery we suggest charging it at least one time per month.
Our helmets like to be used regularly and don't need a break, however, if you still want to store them during the cold winters we suggest you keep them indoors at room temperature and (dis)charge it to about 50%~70% before storage.
Avoid extreme ambient temperatures.
Your helmet is designed to perform well in a wide range of ambient temperatures, with 62° to 72° F (16° to 22° C) as the ideal comfort zone. It’s recommended to avoid exposing your device to ambient temperatures higher than 95° F (35° C) as this can impact the battery performance or potentially damage it. That is, your battery won’t power your device as long on a given charge.
Charging the device in high ambient temperatures may damage it further. Software may limit charging above 80% when the recommended battery temperatures are exceeded. Even storing a battery in a hot environment can damage it irreversibly.
When using your device in a very cold environment, you may notice a decrease in battery life, but this condition is temporary. Once the battery’s temperature returns to its normal operating range, its performance will return to normal as well.
If you want to store your device long-term, two key factors will affect the overall health of your battery: the environmental temperature and the percentage of charge on the battery when it’s powered down for storage. Therefore, we recommend the following:
- Do not fully charge or discharge your device’s battery — charge it to around 50 - 70%. If you store a device when its battery is fully discharged, the battery could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding a charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may lose some capacity, leading to shorter battery life.
- Power down the device to avoid additional battery use.
- Place your device in a cool, moisture-free environment that’s less than 90° F (32° C).
- If you plan to store your device for longer than six months, charge it to 50% every six months.
Depending on how long you store your helmet, it may be in a low-battery state when you remove it from long-term storage. After it’s removed from storage, it may require charging before you can use it.
What is MIPS?
Multi-Impact Protection System, or MIPS, is a helmet-integrated brain protection system designed to provide additional brain protection in the event of angled or rotational impacts. All MIPS-certified helmets are tested to withstand an impact speed of up to 6.2 meters per second. All Lumos helmets, whether or not they are equipped with MIPS, are tested and certified according to US and EU standards. All our helmets come with the option to upgrade to MIPS.
You can read more about MIPS on our website.
Can I turn off the front and rear lights on any of the helmets and only use the turn signals?
Yup! You can use the Lumos app to turn off the front and rear lights while still being able to use the turn signals. You can also turn off just the front lights or vice versa if you choose to do so.
- Turn on your Lumos helmet and make sure it’s paired with the app.
- Launch the Lumos app.
- On the Dashboard, select the light setting (1, 2, or 3) you want to change and overwrite. Then remove the dashes that are displayed in the ‘Front Lights’ and/or ‘Rear Lights’ fields. Leaving a straight line, you get a solid light. Removing all dashes, the lights are off.
Tip: The more dashes you remove, the slower the flashing. One dash translates into one very quick flash.
How visible are the lights?
Our helmet best performs at night and when it's dark. On a bright, sunny day, they're not terribly visible. The intention of the helmet is also to light you up and keep you visible, not light up the roads ahead of you.
This was intentional.
As they sit higher than traditional bike lights, at eye level of drivers, we did not want LEDs that were too bright, especially as our helmets operate with flashing mode (fast and slow) to enhance visibility. High-intensity, flashing lights at eye level were, we decided, something which could distract drivers and endanger rather than protect cyclists.

Does the helmet require a phone to work?
Nope! The basic functions of the helmet such as lights and turn signals will work on their own without a smartphone app.
That being said, the Lumos App will allow you to customize the different light modes, patterns, and other settings that level up your riding experience! You can check out all of these features and more here in this article here.

My helmet won't turn on / off!
1. If the helmet won't turn on:
The battery could most likely be depleted. Do give it a full charge when you first receive it! Be sure to also charge it correctly.
If there are any issues with your helmet in turning it on after you charge, simply email us at support@lumoshelmet.co with:
- A quick summary of what isn't working.
- Your order number (e.g. US#1234) or a copy of your Amazon receipt.
- A short video recording of the issue. In this case, plug your helmet into the charger, make sure the helmet lights up to indicate that it's charging, unplug the charging cable, then try to turn on the helmet with a short press. If the helmet doesn't light up, show us the orientation of the plug to the camera before plugging your helmet in. You will also want to plug in your charging cable to the remote to see if the charging cable works.
- The serial number of your helmet. You can find this on a white sticker inside your helmet toward the rear. It should look something like: "WMUTMBKxxxxx"
- Your shipping address and phone number (Used for courier purposes only).
2. If the helmet won't turn off:
There are a few rare cases where we've seen the helmet "stuck" while it's on. The helmet just stays in solid mode and doesn't turn off when the power button is held.
To solve this issue, plug it into a charging cable. This will put the helmet into a soft reset mode.
If this issue happens more than once or twice, please email us at support@lumoshelmet.co to open a case with us. Please send us a video recording when it happens and we'll be happy to help you out as per our warranty!
